Tyndall Galleries at University Place is a 2,500-square-foot gallery designed to maximize the flexibility of display and to optimize art storage, framing and office areas.
The project is conceived as a series of subtly intersecting surfaces and volumes intended to enhance, rather than compete with the artwork being displayed. Working within University Place’s standard twenty-four foot high lease bay, the interior space is constructed of simply rendered sheetrock walls of varying height, thickness, and proportion, designed to offer a variety of settings conducive to the exhibit of both flatwork and sculpture. Overhead, a suspended horizontal plane dubbed “the cloud,” suggests an axial line of passage though the gallery, linking the act of entry to the work within. Set apart from the space’s exposed lattice of structure and ventilation ducts, the cloud is articulated by a blue halo of ambient illumination, provided by concealed LED fixtures.
