2010 | Walltown Recreation Center | Durham, NC

The Walltown Recreation Center is 24,000-square-foot multi-use community facility located in Durham’s historic Walltown neighborhood. The building serves local residents across the lifespan with a gymnasium that can double as an assembly hall, a suspended running track, teen and senior centers, and a dance studio.

The building is sited on a narrow strip of park land overlooking a lush creek bed. Care was taken to preserve as much of the park’s original grove of mature oak trees as possible.

The majority of the Center’s functions are organized along a central, two-story concourse and sheltered within a zinc-clad enclosure. The building’s envelope is highly efficient and includes insulation and air-infiltration measures well above recommended standards for a facility of this type.
