Orange County, North Carolina This four bedroom residence, sited on a 3.5 acre tract abutting a wooded creek frontage, is firmly grounded within the site, comfortably fitted into the natural terrain with access from all sides. Views to the surrounding pastoral setting are emphasized in the home's planning, both in the development of its living spaces and the creation of its outdoor terraces. To accomodate the elevation of the creek's flood plain, the house is raised on the southern side to create a large outdoor living porch.
The home features a number of energy conserving strategies. For example, its north-south orientation offers protection from solar heat gain and limits the potential for damage to the owner's collection of art. The addition of tempered glass sunshades on the southern exposure further enhances the environmental performance of the house. Roof-mounted solar panels provide a source for radiant heating and domestic hot water. The home’s principal living spaces are arranged along a gallery concourse which defines an exterior courtyard, accentuated by a gridded bosque of ornamental trees and a reflecting pool. The character of the home, though intentionally understated, emphasizes elegance, simplicity, and thoroughly modern lines. Principal exterior materials include aluminum framed glazing, painted stucco and masonry. |
