Duke Free Electron Laser Laboratory. The additional space and equipment in the new building provides for the continued exploration of new applications of free electron lasers, including surgical, imaging, and clinical investigations. The building also houses IR, visible, and UV MFEL beamlines. The new building is comprised of three main spaces: track and field area, artificial turf area, and athletic/support spaces. The 115,000 square foot main facility houses six 42-inch and eight 48-inch sprint lanes on a 220 meter track with hydraulically banked curves, an Astroturf field, weight training facility, and spectator grandstands. The building contains public spaces, locker room facilities, a training room, strength training room, and storage. The facility is used for both competitive and special events. The complex is anchored by a three-theater performing arts center which includes a 2,800 seat Broadway roadhouse, a 500 seat community theater, and a 200 seat black box experimental stage. Adjoining the center is a performing arts school which will train over 3,500 high school students in the dramatic arts, dance, and music. A thirty-story tower rises above the performing arts center and contains office space, residential condominiums, and an upscale hotel. In subsequent phases, an arts oriented retail mall and two additional office and residential towers will be added to the project.
