Chapel Hill and Durham, North Carolina Created in collaboration with owner Joe Rowand, the original Somerhill Gallery was designed to evoke a feeling of relaxation and warmth while thoughtfully displaying a wide spectrum of art, all within a modestly scaled, storefront retail space. With five separate galleries featuring bleached maple floors and fabric covered walls, Somerhill has become one of the most prominent galleries in the Southeast and an oasis for sophisticated art collectors. Featuring primarily the work of regional artists, the galleries display abstract and representational art spanning a variety of disciplines, including painting, prints and etchings, glass, jewelry, sculpture, and photography, all in the intimate atmosphere of the gallery's elegant, two level setting.
In 2008, Somerhill Gallery relocated to a new space adjacent to the American Tobacco Historic District in Durham, North Carolina. Again, the project is the product of a creative collaboration between Mr. Rowand and Szostak Design. The new Somerhill Gallery, while more spacious than the original, still retains an evident sense of welcoming warmth and relaxed comfort. Artwork is displayed in a series of interconnected galleries which culminate in a light-filled courtyard that doubles as a sculpture garden. An adjoining exhibition gallery is complimented by a welcoming fireplace and informal lounge seating, gestures that further enhance the space’s comfortable warmth and home-like intimacy. Throughout the project, artificial and natural illumination - including over fifty skylights - is carefully orchestrated to enhance the presentation of the artwork. |
