Durham, North Carolina The Walltown Recreation Center is a 24,000 square foot, multi-use community facility located in Durham's historic Walltown neighborhood. The building features a gymnasium that can double as an assembly hall, a suspended running track, teen and senior centers, dance studios, classrooms, a media lab, and administrative space. The building is sited on a narrow strip of parkland overlooking a lush creekbed. Care has been taken to preserve as much of the park's original grove of mature oak trees as possible. The majority of the Center's functions are organized along a central, two-story concourse and sheltered within a dramatically sculpted, zinc-clad enclosure. The building's design incorporates the original Walltown Community Center, which was built by neighborhood residents in the mid-1960s. ![]() |
